OUR MISSION

Supporting Students Who Deserve a Chance

The Swinging Janice Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit organisation established in 2012 and based in Ontario, Canada. Founded by Janice Williams-Lau, the foundation was created with a clear purpose — to support deserving, industrious, and underprivileged students in their pursuit of secondary education.

COMMONWEALTH OF DOMINICA

About Dominica — The Nature Isle

Dominica is a small island nation in the Lesser Antilles of the Eastern Caribbean, nestled between the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Celebrated as "The Nature Isle of the Caribbean" for its pristine rainforests, volcanic mountains, and spectacular waterfalls, Dominica is one of the most naturally preserved islands in the region.

Despite its natural beauty, many families on the island face significant economic challenges, and financial barriers often prevent talented children from accessing secondary education.

Important: Dominica ≠ Dominican Republic

Dominica (Commonwealth of Dominica) is a separate island nation in the Eastern Caribbean and is entirely distinct from the Dominican Republic. All our foundation work and references relate specifically to the Commonwealth of Dominica.

Growing up, Janice experienced a life of poverty in the capital city of Roseau. As an ambitious child, she wished to attend school but could not afford it. Thanks to Save The Children, a charity organization of Canada, she was able to gain a high school education. This was the spark that led her to develop a strong passion for philanthropy and the well being of the Dominican community.

Janice Williams-Lau

Janice Williams-Lau founded the Swinging Janice Scholarship Foundation in 2012 in Ontario, Canada, inspired by a lifelong belief that every child deserves access to education, regardless of financial circumstances.

Rooted in her deep Caribbean heritage and guided by an unwavering commitment to community development, Janice built the foundation from the ground up. Through the support of donors and alumni of Dominica Grammar School across North America, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean—alongside funds raised through community events and Janice’s own personal contributions—the organization has driven meaningful and lasting change in Dominica.

Her work provides scholarships, school supplies, uniforms, and essential support to students who might otherwise face significant barriers to education. Through annual scholarship ceremonies and ongoing community partnerships, the foundation continues to expand its reach and impact each year.
